Funny thing really, I originally planned to study at Leeds University, doing the Graphics Communication course. However, for some reason I chose here to study instead. I don't know whether by accident or on purpose but I'm here now.
- I had heard that the standard was very high, I looked a lot at what the curriculum involved and like how much emphasis was put on practical work.
- I liked the fact that is was specialist in only art, I felt that being in a community that was focused on my subject and subjects similar would give me better direction and help me develop a love for all the other crafts taught here.
- I liked the city Leeds, though I had only visited it once I liked how much it reminded me of my home city Manchester. I felt comfortable and as though I could get to know the place well.
- LCA has a very good reputation
- I liked how intense I was repeatedly told the course would be. I love to be challenged and often become quite bored with work that doesn't excite me, or make me nervous.
5 Things - You Want To Learn During Your Time On The Programme
- I would like to learn more about the broader subject of art history. Already through a few lectures I am happy that we are taught the context of what we do. I have always enjoyed academic subjects and it is perhaps my favourite part of this course.
- I would like to learn more about the rules of graphics design. Unlike more 'free' subjects like art, though graphics is about expression it does have principles that make it so successful. I definitely want to learn how important these are and hopefully learn how to use them in my own work.
- I would like to learn how to better my academic writing. I have always loved it but at this stage I understand that it;s very different. Hopefully I can learn some skills to make my essays and other writings clear and coherent.
- I want to learn how to speak and interact with other designers. Other designers will hopefully help me to improve my own work. Two head are better than one.
- Time management I think will be a big thing. I've never had to really rganise myself as I've never found anything excruciatingly hard, but I'm looking forward to having lots of work and having to designate time to it.
5 Skills - You Think Are Your Strengths
- I can work well under pressure.
- I am good at contributing to group discussions and sharing ideas and thoughts.
- I'm not afraid to take charge of a project, I am happy to take lead as well as being part of a team. I like and appreciate the work that collaboration brings.
- I am a quick learner and am always eager to learn new things.
- I like to think I can create work for a purpose, I like to think I can respond to a brief clearly and simply.
5 Things - You want to improve
- I would like to challenge my anxiety and feel comfortable speaking to people one on one and socialising as myself, in groups.
- I want to improve the quality of my work.
- I want to find/improve a personal style of my own to pursue and develop.
- I would like to improve my public speaking and presentation abilities. I would definitely like to be a public speaker in the future and overcoming my social fears and learning to establish confidence in myself will help me with this.
- I would like to improve my greater knowledge of history and the context of what we do and how it applies.
5 Ways - You Will Evaluate Your Progress
- I will look back at my old work and compare it to work I am creating now
- The opinions of others and my own opinions of my work. Crits will definitely help me to improve my work and help me realise where it is i'm going wrong, or what qualities of my work are most effective.
- Self reflection through the form of my blog, hopefully as modules go on I will be better at documenting and producing high quality work
- Through my grades and marking outcomes of each module.
- Talking to tutors through and asking if my progress is evident.
